Nigerian hairdresser sentenced to five years for trafficking women

The Achimota Circuit Court sentenced Nicky Isabella to five years in prison. She is a 22-year-old hairdresser convicted of trafficking two young Nigerian women.

Isabella, known as Bella, promised the victims jobs in Ghana. Upon arrival, she forced them into prostitution instead.

The trial was overseen by Mrs. Akosua Anokyewaa Adjepong. The victims were aged 22 and 23 and were told they would work at a supermarket in Accra.

Instead, Isabella took their earnings and made them swear an oath on a Bible. She cut pieces of their pubic hair and threatened them with rituals if they disobeyed her.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Isaac Babayi led the prosecution. He revealed that Isabella conspired with an accomplice named Nelly, who is still at large. They trafficked the victims from Nigeria to Ghana in May 2024.

ASP Babayi urged for a harsh sentence to deter similar crimes. He emphasized the premeditated and exploitative nature of Isabella’s actions.

The judge considered Isabella's age and first-time offender status. However, she noted Isabella's lack of remorse and the threat human trafficking poses to society.

Isabella had no legal representation and cried when the sentence was announced. The Anti-Human Trafficking Unit is investigating to find Nelly.

The rescued victims are receiving psychosocial support after their ordeal. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) William Ayariga stated that Ghana is not safe for human traffickers.

He warned those who lure vulnerable people into prostitution will face severe consequences. DSP Ayariga highlighted that last year, nine convictions were secured under the Human Trafficking Act, including one for 20 years.

He reaffirmed the Unit’s commitment to arresting and prosecuting offenders without delay. “No form of human trafficking or migrant smuggling will be tolerated,” he said.

Court documents showed that Isabella admitted to forcing the victims into prostitution and taking their money. A search of her room found a notebook recording proceeds and human hair used for intimidation purposes.
