Painter accused of stealing Bank of Ghana cables granted GH¢1M bail

A painter has been accused of stealing electrical cables at the new Bank of Ghana building in Ridge.

Ahmed Mohammed Lawal was granted bail by an Accra Circuit Court. His bail is set at GH¢1 million with two sureties.

Judge Isaac Addo ordered the prosecution to follow disclosure rules. The case has been adjourned to May 7, 2025.

Lawal faces charges of unlawful entry and theft of cables worth GH¢1,035,500. He has denied these charges.

The prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Agustin Kingsley Oppong, presented the case. The complainants are Samuel Nii Tettey and Davidson Mensah Otinkorang. They work as a safety officer and electrical engineer at the construction site.

On February 16, 2025, they discovered a break-in at the Energy Farm on site. Several copper cables were stolen, valued at GH¢1,035,500.

The prosecution reviewed CCTV footage showing Lawal and two others stealing cables from the Energy Farm. Bundles of electrical cables were stored there.

The complainants caught Lawal and turned him over to the police. Investigations revealed that he and two accomplices accessed the Energy Farm using scaffolding.

They cut the copper cables with a sharp object and took them away. Lawal sold some cables for GH¢2,000 at Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

He could not help police arrest his accomplices or the person who bought the stolen cables.
