The Volta Regional police intercepted 33,000 rounds of ammunition on Friday.
The ammunition was packed in 132 boxes. It was concealed in a Hyundai bus. The bus was bound for Benin from Accra and had the registration number GR 8246-Q.
This operation was part of security measures for Easter festivities.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Felix Danku shared this information at a press conference. He said police were on duty at the Tadzewu-Mitsrikasa barrier in Ketu North Municipality.
They stopped the vehicle, which had passengers onboard. A routine search revealed 60 cartons of AAA cartridges with 15,000 pieces. They also found 72 cartons of BB cartridges containing 18,000 pieces.
The driver, Abasou Fusseni, is 45 years old. His co-driver, Salisu Jalilu, is 38 years old. Both were arrested for questioning but denied knowledge of the illegal goods.
