Prime suspect in UEW lecturer’s killing remanded

The Winneba Magistrate Court has remanded Joshua Karry Arthur. He is the prime suspect in the murder of Professor Mawuadem Amedeker. Prof. Amedeker was a senior lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).

Arthur was arrested at the professor’s home in Gyahadze on May 22. He later appeared in court as police continued their investigations.

Prof. Amedeker had been missing for several weeks. His family and colleagues filed an official complaint with the police.

After an intense search, his body was found buried near his home. It has been taken to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Arthur was arrested in connection with this case. Police found several items believed to belong to Prof. Amedeker: a laptop, a 50-inch television, two Samsung smartphones, and a car key for a Toyota Fortuner.

The shocking nature of the lecturer’s death has distressed the Gyahadze community. In response, the Effutu Divisional Police Command sent many officers to ensure security.

ACP Ibrahim Opoku told the Ghana News Agency that they received information about the lecturer’s disappearance on May 21. Officers quickly went to Gyahadze and brought in a young man for questioning.

However, when they returned the next day, he was missing. Their search led them to Prof. Amedeker's residence, where they found his remains buried in the backyard.

“We called local residents who identified the body,” ACP Opoku stated. “We transported it to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital’s mortuary for autopsy and further investigation.”
