Prime suspect in Winneba lecturer’s murder remanded

The Winneba Magistrate Court has remanded Joshua Karry Arthur. He is a prime suspect in the murder of Professor Mawuadem Amedeker. Prof Amedeker was a Senior Lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba.

Arthur was arrested at the professor’s home in Gyahadze on May 22. He was later brought before the court during police investigations.

Prof Amedeker had been missing for several weeks. His family and colleagues filed an official complaint with the police. After a thorough search, his body was found buried near his residence.

The body has been taken to the morgue at Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for an autopsy.

Arthur was arrested in connection with this case. Police recovered items belonging to Prof Amedeker from him. These included a laptop, a 50-inch television, two Samsung smartphones, and a car key for a Toyota Fortuner.

The shocking circumstances of the lecturer's death have unsettled the community. Many residents are still in shock over this incident.

To ensure safety, additional police personnel have been deployed to Gyahadze. This aims to help residents feel secure as they go about their daily lives.

ACP Ibrahim Opoku, Divisional Commander, spoke with Ghana News Agency (GNA). He said they received information about the lecturer's disappearance on May 21.

Police quickly went to Gyahadze and took one young man for questioning. They returned the next day but could not find him. Their search led them to Prof Amedeker's house, where they discovered his remains buried in the backyard.

It is suspected that he was killed and then buried there. The police called local residents who identified the body before transporting it to the hospital for further investigation and autopsy.
