An Accra High Court has remanded seven people for illegal mining.
The accused are Douglas Bediako, Samuel Tanor (aka Ameyaw), Richard Yaw Sey, Justin Akyirbri, Shon Vitus, Akembasiya James, and Gideon Asordina.
They face charges of conspiracy to commit a crime. This includes mining without a license from the Minister.
Justice Mrs. Kizita Naa Koowa Quarshie presided over the case. The court did not take their pleas. They will return on May 15, 2025.
Police personnel from the National Police headquarters filed the complaint. They were assigned by the Inspector General of Police to fight illegal mining.
On May 1, 2025, during a special operation at Wassa Dunkwa, police found the accused engaged in illegal mining.
The team captured visuals of some accused working in mining pits and their arrest.
The accused claimed they were hired by others to work in these pits.
A “Sanny” excavator operated by Douglas Bediako was seized at the site. Its registration number is GN 695-24.
