Thieves have reportedly broken into the Techiman Metropolitan Department of Agriculture's warehouse. They stole about 9,860 bags of rice and various fertilizers.
The stolen items included 4,447 bags of MP4 fertilizer and 3,150 bags of Urea fertilizer. This theft occurred a week after the December 7 General Election.
Madam Grace Obeng Amenya oversees stock at the department. She said these items were meant for drought-affected farmers in the area.
“We received the items a week before the elections,” she explained. “We planned to distribute them to farmers in need.”
Just before the elections, they received a call about unknown individuals at the warehouse. The thieves broke original padlocks and replaced them with new ones.
Madam Amenya reported the incident to the police. A regional investigative team has been formed to look into it.
When investigators entered the warehouse, they confirmed that items were missing. Stephen Aidoo, Director of Agriculture in Techiman, also confirmed this incident.
He told GNA that investigations are ongoing but no arrests have been made yet.
