Tiler jailed two years for escaping lawful custody

A 25-year-old tiler has been sentenced to two years in prison. The Asante Akropong Circuit Court found him guilty of escaping lawful custody.

Akwasi Kuffour pleaded guilty to the charge. He was convicted based on his own plea.

Police Detective Inspector Alexander Agbekpornu presented the case. He told the court that the complainant was a police officer from Abuakwa, near Akropong.

In 2023, Kuffour faced charges of assaulting a public officer. He also faced charges for resisting arrest and causing damage. He was remanded into prison custody after his arraignment.

While leaving the Magistrate’s chamber, Kuffour fled and went into hiding.

The prosecution stated that he was rearrested in April 2024 at Kumasi-Tanoso. This arrest was for allegedly stealing a mobile phone.

During questioning, Kuffour admitted to escaping from custody. After further investigations, he was charged again and brought back to court. This led to his conviction and sentencing.
