Togolese robbery suspect referred for psychiatric evaluation after allegedly eating his own faeces

A Togolese robbery suspect has been sent to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital. He will undergo a mental evaluation. The suspect shows signs of coprophagy, which is eating one's own faeces.

The suspect is Adinda Akpo Abdou Moudjibou. He claims to be a businessman living in Ghana. He is accused of several robberies in East Legon, Accra.

On April 13, 2024, Moudjibou allegedly robbed a doctor. He took valuables worth US$200,000 in cash and gold items. These included a gold waist chain valued at GHS20,000 and a gold necklace worth GHS18,000. He also stole gold earrings and a registered pistol belonging to the doctor’s husband.

The police were notified about the incident. A forensic investigation began immediately. Moudjibou fled to Togo after the robbery but was arrested in Lomé by Interpol Togo. He was extradited to Ghana on May 14, 2024, due to cooperation between law enforcement agencies.

In his caution statement, Moudjibou admitted to multiple robberies. He claimed he had help from a motor rider and an accomplice named Mohammed Djando, who is still at large.

During court proceedings, ASP Richard Amoah led the prosecution. He stated that investigations were incomplete due to Moudjibou's strange behavior. “He defecates and eats his own faeces,” ASP Amoah told the court. He requested a psychiatric assessment for the suspect's mental state.

The prosecution also asked for permission to hold Moudjibou at the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) if needed. Judge Basilia Adjei-Tawiah granted this request. She ordered that he be taken for evaluation at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital and remanded into NIB custody pending further investigation.
