An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced 19-year-old Rashid Aziz to 24 months in prison. He was found guilty of conspiracy, unlawful entry, and stealing.
Aziz's accomplice, 20-year-old Nelson Godwin Ezel, denied the charges. Ezel has been remanded into police custody until June 11, 2025.
The pair allegedly stole several items from a complainant's room. This included an iPhone 11 Pro Max worth GH¢5,500 and a Samsung tablet valued at GH¢1,200. They also took jewellery worth GH¢3,000 and GH¢3,000 in cash on May 15, 2025.
Fati Ahmed discovered the theft at around 4:50 AM. She is a trader living in Madina. Fati contacted her brother Abdul Rashid for help tracking the stolen iPhone.
They traced the phone to a repair shop in Korle Bu. The repairer said a young man brought it in for unlocking. The young man and the phone were returned to Fati, who reported it to Nima Police Station.
During investigations, the young man named Aziz and Ezel as his accomplices. Initially, they were untraceable but later arrested with the stolen items.
The police transferred them to James Town Police Station for further questioning. At James Town, the young man identified Aziz and Ezel as those who gave him the phone.
The prosecution stated that both accused admitted their crimes during questioning. They explained they needed money for transport back to Agbogbloshie.
To get this money, they broke into Fati’s room. The court was presided over by Mr. Isaac Addo. He convicted Aziz and sentenced him to two years in prison.
