'I am a singer, Patapaa isn’t but he's great' - Yaw Darling clarifies, apologises to musician

Ghanaian singer Yaw Darling, the 2025 TGMA Unsung Artiste of the Year, recently spoke about comparisons to other musicians. He prefers being compared to Kuami Eugene instead of Patapaa.

In an interview with Andy Dosty on Showbiz Review Xtra, Yaw Darling explained his reasoning. He stated, “I am a singer; Patapaa is not.” He admires Kuami Eugene as one of Ghana's greatest singers.

When asked why he chose Patapaa as an example, he said it was spontaneous. “Patapaa is a good musician,” he noted. However, he felt people misunderstood his comments and wanted to apologize.

He acknowledged media personality Sammy Flex’s advice to apologize to Patapaa. Yaw Darling had planned to do this on X while on tour in the central region.

“I didn’t say it nicely,” he admitted. “I meant to express my admiration for Kuami Eugene.” He emphasized that Patapaa's talent is also impressive.

Yaw Darling clarified how he views music styles differently. “We have those who make music and others who simply sing,” he explained. He believes his writing process aligns more with Kuami Eugene's style.

He added that mentioning Patapaa was out of respect for his craft and their shared background. The discussion began when Yaw Darling expressed his feelings about industry comparisons.

He sees being compared to Kuami Eugene as a compliment rather than an insult to Patapaa. However, some fans reacted strongly online, believing it disrespected Patapaa’s artistry.
