'Managers of SOEs must skillfully resist political interference' - Jabesh Amissah-Arthur

Jabesh Amissah-Arthur chairs the Technical Committee on ECG's privatization. He advises CEOs of public institutions to resist political interference.

His comments address concerns about politicisation in Ghana's state-owned enterprises. This issue is particularly relevant in the energy sector, where politics often hinders efficiency.

Speaking at the JoyNews National Dialogue on April 10, he acknowledged that political interference is common. However, he emphasized that top management must shield their organizations from undue pressure.

He stated that minimizing political influence is a key leadership test for public sector CEOs.

Amissah-Arthur remarked, “Political interference exists everywhere. It’s up to management to keep it minimal.” He added that if a CEO cannot protect their company from external influences, they should reconsider their position.

While leaders cannot ignore directives from political authorities, they should advise and negotiate alternatives. They must prioritize the best interests of both the company and the country.

“You need to inform those giving instructions when something won't work,” he said.

He urged public servants to act in Ghana's best interest. Hiding behind “orders from above” is not an excuse for harmful policies.

According to Amissah-Arthur, true leadership involves protecting institutional integrity. CEOs should find innovative ways to meet government expectations without compromising values or sustainability.
