Climate change and industrialization have driven numerous extraordinary species to extinction. The Spix’s Macaw, native to Brazil, was declared extinct in 2019, while the golden toad of Costa Rica vanished due to climate change. The Pyrenean ibex and Caribbean monk seal were lost to hunting and habitat destruction. Rapid industrialization in China led to the extinction of the Baiji dolphin, while the woolly mammoth succumbed to disease. Overexploitation drove the Pinta Island tortoise to extinction, and despite conservation efforts, the genetically unique West African black rhino was declared extinct in 2011. The dodo, a flightless bird from Mauritius, was wiped out, leaving no surviving species. These extinctions highlight the devastating impact of human activity on biodiversity.
