‘Yo, he up next’—Akon reacts to Gen Z mistaking him for a new artist

Akon is experiencing a resurgence, thanks to Gen Z. He recently appeared on The Sherri Show, as reported by MyNewsGh. During the show, he shared that younger fans are discovering his music. Some even think he’s a new artist.

“I went on a show called On the Radar,” he explained. “After I performed Locked Up, I read the comments. Someone wrote, ‘Yo, he up next!’”

Akon laughed at this comment. “It was funny because some had no idea who I was,” he said. “But it was great to see their reaction.”

His music is gaining popularity on TikTok. Songs like Beautiful and Never Really Mattered are going viral. “That’s probably the best feeling I’ve had,” Akon admitted.

He is also exploring country music now. He plans to remix his classics with a Southern twist. “We’re doing all the classics in country,” he stated.

When asked about Smack That as a country track, he joked about a honky-tonk version.

Akon confirmed that a new album is finally coming out. “It’s been at least 10 years,” he said. He explained that time flew by while he was in Africa.

Despite his time away from music, Akon feels more excited than ever to return. “To be embraced by a whole new generation? That’s a blessing.”
