Accra ranks as the 5th most expensive city in Africa for rent, with a rent index of 12.0, placing it 230th globally, according to Numbeo. High rents strain household finances, leaving little for essentials like food, education, and healthcare. Lagos tops the African list with a rent index of 24.3, followed by Cape Town (18.0), Addis Ababa (17.8), and Dar es Salaam (14.4). Conversely, cities like Alexandria, Cairo, Tripoli, Algiers, and Tunis have the lowest rent costs. While urban centers offer better infrastructure and economic opportunities, the rising cost of living relative to income highlights the challenges of city life, especially as remote work becomes more common.
