Africa's population, at 1.5 billion in 2024, represents 18% of the global total and is projected to reach 2.5 billion by 2050. This rapid growth, driven by urbanization and migration to cities with better infrastructure and economic opportunities, presents both challenges and opportunities. Sub-Saharan Africa leads with some of the fastest-growing cities globally, but economic growth lags, failing to match population increases. This imbalance strains resources, infrastructure, and services, highlighting the need for effective planning to ensure sustainable development. Since 1960, Africa's population has grown fivefold, reflecting its role as a global population growth hub. Addressing these dynamics is crucial for cities to support their expanding populations while fostering economic and social development.
