Grammy-winning Afrobeats star Burna Boy has urged rising Nigerian musicians to look beyond social media hype and local chart success.
In a viral Instagram story posted on April 8, he cautioned that validation from Nigerian platforms offers little financial return or global recognition.
He explained that while one million streams in Nigeria may yield just $300–$400, the same number could earn artists over $3,000 in the US or UK.
“Being number one in Nigeria isn’t worth celebrating,” he stated, advising artists to broaden their ambitions or run side businesses.
Burna warned that online praise won’t translate to international success, saying, “Twitter polls and Naija fans won’t fill stadiums for you abroad.” His message calls for a shift in focus—from local popularity to global impact.
