'Akwaaba (Welcome)' and 'Welcome to Africa': Alabaster Box sues Medikal for GHS10m

Ghanaian a cappella group Alabaster Box has sued rapper Medikal. His real name is Samuel Adu Frimpong. They claim he used part of their song "Akwaaba" without permission.

Alabaster Box's lawyers informed Medikal about the issue. They noticed he included a portion of their song in his new release, "Welcome to Africa." They demanded he remove the song from all platforms immediately. This includes stopping its marketing and performances.

Alabaster Box is suing Medikal for GHS10 million in damages. The writ of summons was signed by Richard Nunekpeku, their lawyer. It states that after an initial warning, Medikal only deleted the first ten seconds on YouTube. However, other platforms like Audiomack, Boomplay, Spotify, and Apple Music still have the disputed content.

The writ claims that deleting just ten seconds on YouTube shows disrespect. It also suggests this action admits guilt. Alabaster Box is seeking an additional GHS5 million for exemplary damages. They want another GHS5 million for linking their Gospel brand to vulgar lyrics in "Welcome to Africa."
