Alabaster Box sues Medikal for GH₵15 million over alleged copyright infringement

Alabaster Box Sues Medikal Over Copyright Infringement

Alabaster Box has filed a lawsuit against rapper Medikal. The case is in the Accra High Court. They allege copyright infringement related to his song "Welcome To Africa."

Medikal must respond within eight days of being notified. If he fails to do so, a judgment may be made without him.

The acapella group claims that the first ten seconds of Medikal's song is derived from their copyrighted work, "Akwaaba." They are seeking GHS 15 million in damages and other demands.

According to Alabaster Box's lawyers, Medikal only deleted the first ten seconds from YouTube. However, the original version remains on platforms like Audiomack and Spotify.

The lawsuit states that Medikal’s actions were disrespectful and an admission of guilt. Alabaster Box argues that using their work without permission infringes on their copyright.

They seek general damages of GHS 10 million for this infringement. Additionally, they want GHS 5 million in exemplary damages for intentional copyright violation and brand damage.

In related news, Medikal recently addressed comparisons between himself and fellow rapper Kwesi Arthur. He urged fans to stop making these comparisons on social media.
