Attending Aggrey Memorial wasn’t the right choice for me – Yvonne Nelson

Actress and producer Yvonne Nelson has shared her negative experience at Aggrey Memorial Secondary School. She expressed her dissatisfaction during an interview on The Career Trail program on Joy Learning TV and Joy News.

Yvonne attended Aggrey Memorial because of her stepfather. He was the PTA Chairman, so she felt she had no choice. “When you finish JSS, you are definitely going to Aggrey Memorial,” she said. She described her time there as "bad" with few good memories.

One major reason for her dislike was being forced to study Accounting. “I was coerced, pushed, and forced to do Accounting,” she explained. She had no interest in the subject or its calculations.

Yvonne also mentioned harsh discipline methods used by some teachers. They often employed corporal punishment, creating a fearful environment for students. “Some days you were afraid to go to class because one teacher would beat everybody,” she revealed.

This fear affected her performance during the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE). “I didn’t go in when we were writing Costing and Accounting,” she said. She struggled with the subjects and often skipped classes due to fear of punishment.

In contrast, Yvonne found success with a personal coach who helped her understand the material without using fear tactics. “He took me through gently, so I wasn’t afraid anymore,” she noted.

Yvonne also criticized the poor quality of food at Aggrey Memorial. She believes it is important to discuss these issues for potential change. “The food was terrible; you wouldn’t want your child to eat that,” she stated.

Additionally, she pointed out poor hygiene at the school, which made her experience worse. In conclusion, Yvonne described her time at Aggrey as a nightmare.
