Awudome Cemetery to be modernised — AMA

The Awudome Cemetery in Greater Accra is set for redevelopment.

The goal is to give it a modern appearance.

Plans include landscaping with lawns, trees, and plants. Walkways will also be redesigned.

Gilbert Ankrah, the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), shared details last Friday. He said the assembly is preparing to start this project.

The redevelopment aims to create a serene environment for visitors. It will focus on the eastern side of the cemetery, opposite the State Transport Company (STC). This area has been closed for burials for many years and needs revitalization.

Mr. Ankrah noted that the western side remains open for public burials. It is not yet at full capacity. Graves are allocated in an organized manner to use space efficiently.

He confirmed there are no plans to close or relocate the eastern yard, which faces the State Housing Company (SHC) headquarters.

“The eastern section will transform into a modern facility,” he explained. “The other section will remain open to the public.”

He also addressed misconceptions about burial depths. “Graves are not three feet deep as some claim,” he clarified. “The standard depth is six feet for proper coffin accommodation.”

During a recent visit, it was noted that nearby areas had become commercial hubs. Auto repair shops and vulcanizing businesses operate close by.

Some parts around the cemetery have turned into dumping sites. Others have been used for leisure activities, with people lounging on broken tombstones.

In response, Mr. Ankrah mentioned plans to relocate mechanics from near the cemetery to suitable sites. The assembly will also improve lighting in and around the area.

He acknowledged reports of crime and drug use nearby. Mr. Ankrah assured that they would work with security agencies to address these issues.

“The assembly is taking proactive steps to secure the cemetery,” he stated. Measures include enforcing regulations against encroachment and collaborating with stakeholders for protection.
