The Upper East Regional Minister, Akambugri Donatus Atanga, addressed recent events in Bawku. During a visit, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno faced hooting from residents. Atanga clarified that this was not a reaction to calls for peace. Instead, it reflected frustration over the local security situation.
Residents were unhappy with the IGP's comments during his visit. He suggested special police recruitment as a condition for laying down arms. However, locals want an end to the conflict and lasting peace.
Atanga spoke on JoyNews’ Newsfile program on Saturday, April 12. He noted that the youth were disappointed by the IGP's offer. They gathered to demand an end to the ongoing conflict, not preferential treatment in police recruitment.
“The people were not hooting at the IGP because he asked them to give peace a chance,” Atanga said. “They were unhappy about priority recruitment into the police.” Residents expressed dissatisfaction with how security agencies have managed Bawku’s situation.
The Minister’s comments highlight rising tensions in Bawku. Security challenges have persisted there for several years. His remarks indicate a disconnect between state actions and residents' expectations. The youth are calling for fair security measures and economic opportunities.
