Ghanaian musician Rex Omar has shared advice for local artists. He believes they should value local award schemes. Instead of chasing international awards, like the Grammys, he suggests focusing on homegrown recognition.
Omar finds it surprising that Ghanaian artists often disrespect local awards. He stated that the Grammy Awards are primarily for American musicians. "If you disrespect the Ghana Music Awards, I don’t understand wanting a Grammy," he said in an interview.
He compared this to the BET Awards, which originated from an American TV network. "BET is an American TV station that also created its own awards," he explained.
Omar encouraged the Ghanaian creative industry to unite and create their own prestigious award scheme. He believes this could rival the Grammys and attract pan-African interest.
"We can develop our own award if we promote it well," he noted. This effort goes beyond just receiving accolades; it involves building a whole ecosystem for meaningful impact.
Rex Omar's message emphasizes investing in local talent and recognition. This could help Ghanaian artists compete with international awards and markets effectively.
