Burna Boy tells upcoming Artistes to aim higher or do other businesses aside

Burna Boy's Advice to Upcoming Nigerian Artistes

Nigerian Afrobeats star Burna Boy has shared advice for new artists. He warns them not to be misled by social media hype. Validation from only Nigerians can be deceptive.

On April 8, he posted on Instagram, and it went viral. The Grammy-winning musician compared streaming income in Nigeria, the US, and Europe. He noted that earnings from music streaming in Nigeria are much lower.

Burna Boy emphasized that artists should aim for broader goals. Celebrating local chart positions may not help financially. For example, one million streams in Nigeria earns about $300 to $400.

In contrast, the same streams in the UK or US can earn $3,000 to $4,000 or more. He pointed out that topping Nigerian charts does not guarantee substantial income or global recognition.

“Your song being number 1 on any streaming platform in Nigeria is not something to celebrate,” he stated. He encouraged artists to aim higher or consider side businesses.

He warned them against letting Twitter polls and social media fans deceive them. “They won’t fill up any stadium for you anywhere,” he wrote on Instagram.

Burna Boy urged artists to improve their standards and target international markets. Alternatively, they could run other businesses alongside their music careers for financial stability.
