Davido Speaks on Criticism in Nigeria

Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, known as Davido, has shared his thoughts on criticism. He believes he is the most criticized celebrity in Nigeria. This criticism stems from his wealthy background.

Davido mentioned that the "rich kid" stigma could have hurt his career. He hid his background at first to avoid this issue. By the time people learned about his wealth, he had already released hit songs.

In a recent episode of the Culture Knock Out podcast, he said, “I’m the biggest criticised artist in Nigeria.” He added that he has been successful for a while now. Initially, no one knew about his father's wealth.

He explained that it was too late for critics to affect him. “I already did three hit songs before they found out,” he said. Davido emphasized that music was all he wanted to do.

He stated, “I didn’t care if I had to become homeless.” Nothing would stop him from pursuing music. Over time, some people began to dislike him because of his father's riches.

Despite this, Davido continues to release good music and finds success. He noted that criticism is common for anyone who becomes very successful. “Once you become the biggest in anything, you will get criticised,” he said.

He compared it to politics: people love you when you run for office but may hate you once you win.
