DRC president commutes death sentences for 3 Americans convicted in coup attempt

The president of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has changed the death sentences of three Americans to life imprisonment. This decision comes just days before US officials are set to visit the country.

The Americans—Marcel Malanga, Tyler Thompson Jr., and Benjamin Reuben Zalman-Polun—were convicted in September. They were among 37 people sentenced by a military court after a failed coup attempt last year. The coup was led by Malanga’s father, Christian.

The coup plotters aimed to attack the presidential palace and politician Vital Kamerhe's residence in May 2024. At least six people died during a gun battle with presidential guards, including Christian Malanga.

President Felix Tshisekedi announced the clemency on national television late Tuesday. His spokesperson, Tina Salama, confirmed this news to CNN.

Salama explained that the clemency petition came from the public prosecutor. It was recommended by the Minister of Justice. CNN has reached out to Justice Minister Constant Mutamba for further comments.

She emphasized that this decision was not made to appease the US government. The DRC is seeking a minerals-for-security partnership with the US amid ongoing conflict in its eastern region. This conflict involves government forces and a rebel group backed by Rwanda.

“We have no deal with the Americans at this stage,” Salama stated firmly.

CNN has also sought comments from the US State Department and the White House regarding this situation.

US Senior Adviser for Africa Massad Boulos will travel to DRC on Thursday. He will be accompanied by Deputy Assistant Secretary Corina Sanders. Their goal is to promote peace in eastern DRC and encourage US investment in the region.

They also plan visits to neighboring Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya during their trip.
