Dada KD’s death proves why I left Ghana– David Oscar

Ghanaian comedian and musician David Oscar is frustrated with the creative industry in Ghana. He believes the environment is so stifling that talents must either join politics or leave the country.

David Oscar reacted to a Facebook post by veteran musician Rex Omar. The post was about the passing of highlife legend Dada KD. In his comment, David, who now lives in the United States, shared that he paused his career in Ghana due to a lack of support for creatives.

“That’s why I left,” he said passionately. “Ghana ???????? is not very enabling for us creatives.” He noted that joining active politics is often the only option for many artists. They hope their party will come to power so they can benefit.

David's comments followed Rex Omar's claim that Dada KD died from depression. This sparked concern and reflection within the entertainment community.

He suggested that surviving as a creative in Ghana requires political allegiance—a path he rejected. “If you aren’t interested in joining active politics like some of us? You better get out of that shit hole before depression kills you off,” he bluntly stated.

His words have started a broader conversation about mental health among Ghana’s creatives. Many are questioning how sustainable careers in music, comedy, and film are without support or political ties.

Although David Oscar is currently away from the spotlight, his commentary highlights unseen struggles faced by Ghanaian artists. These issues remain unresolved and continue to affect many in the industry.
