Davido joins #FreeVerydarkman movement, praises public support

Afrobeats superstar Davido is calling for the release of activist Verydarkman. Verydarkman was reportedly arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after visiting GTBank.

Davido shared his support on social media. He acknowledged the impact of Verydarkman's work and the growing solidarity for him.

“Outside all the noise, it’s good to see that the good one does actually impacts lives,” he wrote. “The support I’m seeing for VDM everywhere is encouraging. FREE MY GUY,” he added.

Verydarkman, also known as VDM, was arrested on May 2, 2025, in Abuja. His arrest followed a visit to GTBank to address unauthorized withdrawals from his mother’s account.

His lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, reported that VDM was taken by men in black uniforms outside the bank. He claimed VDM was beaten, blindfolded, and detained without formal charges.

The EFCC confirmed his arrest but did not provide details. They stated they are investigating petitions against him. EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale said, “We have some petitions against him that we are working on.”

This arrest has drawn significant criticism both online and offline. As of now, the EFCC has not confirmed or denied holding him.

The reasons behind his arrest remain unclear. Davido's post has gone viral and sparked discussions about risks faced by activists and public figures' roles in supporting ordinary Nigerians.
