Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is a 2024 presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He has urged President John Dramani Mahama to stop state security agencies from political persecution.
This statement follows an unsuccessful attempt by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to arrest Reverend John Ntim Fordjour. The MP for Assin South was targeted at his home on Wednesday.
After visiting Rev. Fordjour, Dr. Bawumia condemned the attempted arrest. He called it "unfortunate political persecution."
Dr. Bawumia noted that Rev. Fordjour remained in high spirits despite the incident. He encouraged party members to stay calm and law-abiding during this troubling time.
He reiterated his call for President Mahama to control his security operatives immediately.
Dr. Bawumia emphasized that security institutions should not be used as political tools for harassment and intimidation.
He warned that Ghanaians would not tolerate a return to fear and arbitrary actions by state agencies.
“Ghanaians will not accept this descent into lawlessness and fear,” he stated. He reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to democracy, rule of law, and political tolerance.
