Donkey that ‘inspired Eddie Murphy’s character in Shrek dies aged 30

Perry, a 30-year-old miniature donkey believed to have inspired Eddie Murphy's character Donkey in Shrek, has died from laminitis, a hoof disease.

Born in 1994, Perry lived in Barron Park, Palo Alto, California, from age three.

The park expressed heartbreak over his passing, noting his significance to the community, with memorial plans forthcoming.

Perry reportedly posed for photos and sketches as a model for Donkey, earning around £60.

Shrek (2001), which won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, featured the beloved, humorous character.

Donkeys typically live 25–40 years.
