Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu appointed as Acting Government Statistician

President John Mahama has appointed Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu as Acting Government Statistician. This appointment is pending further consultations with the Council of State.

The announcement was made in an official statement from the Presidency on Friday.

Dr. Iddrisu is an economist and public sector leader. He currently serves as the Director of the Economic Strategy and Research Division at the Ministry of Finance. He has played a key role in shaping Ghana’s macroeconomic policies.

His responsibilities include economic forecasting, policy research, and assessing Ghana’s real and external sectors.

Dr. Iddrisu has over a decade of experience in government roles. He has held several high-level positions, including:

- Director of Economic Research and Forecasting Division (2013–2019): Oversaw macroeconomic modeling and long-term projections.

- Acting Director of Real Sector Division (2010–2013): Led research on sectoral growth and productivity trends.

He also represents the Ministry of Finance on various boards and committees. His expertise influences important policy decisions.

In addition to his government work, Dr. Iddrisu is a part-time lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA). He holds a PhD in International Development Studies from Japan's National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies.

He also earned a Master of Public Administration from the London School of Economics, an MPhil in Economics, and a BA in Economics with French from the University of Ghana.

Dr. Iddrisu has consulted for organizations like Oxfam GB and the World Bank. This work enhances his reputation as a leading voice in economic policy.

His appointment is provisional until formal consultations with the Council of State are completed. Once confirmed, he will lead the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS). His role will be crucial for data-driven policymaking and national development planning.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP and Spokesperson to the President, highlighted Dr. Iddrisu’s proven track record. He stated that Dr. Iddrisu's leadership will strengthen Ghana’s statistical systems and support evidence-based governance.
