EFCC clarifies VDM’s arrest and bail conditions

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) confirmed that Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), will be released once he meets his bail conditions.

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale spoke to BBC News Pidgin on Monday. He stated that VDM's detention is linked to his bail requirements. “We will release him if he meets his bail conditions,” Oyewale said.

He added that the case would go to court soon. VDM was arrested after multiple petitions were filed against him. The exact nature of these allegations has not been disclosed, but investigations are ongoing.

When asked if Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) was a petitioner, Oyewale did not confirm any names. He cited confidentiality rules protecting complainants' identities.

VDM’s arrest in Abuja has sparked public interest and concern. Many social media users accuse authorities of targeting outspoken individuals.

His lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, claimed the arrest happened inside a GTBank branch. This suggests possible involvement from the bank, but GTBank denied any complicity. They released CCTV footage showing the arrest did not occur on their premises and called for an independent investigation.

Protests erupted in Abuja on Monday as VDM's supporters gathered outside GTBank’s headquarters. The demonstrators held placards and chanted slogans demanding his unconditional release.

They described the arrest as an infringement on free speech rights. However, the EFCC insists that the arrest followed due process and will soon be presented in court.
