Efya Calls Out MTN Over MoMo Fraud Attempt
Ghanaian singer Efya has accused MTN of a security lapse. Someone tried to withdraw GH¢107.10 from her MoMo account without her consent. She shared a screenshot of the attempted transaction on social media.
In her post, Efya questioned how someone accessed her customer information. She urged MTN to improve its security measures. An OTP message was sent to her phone during the incident.
Efya expressed frustration in her message: "HOW IS IT THAT MTN FRAUDSTERS CAN SEND AN OTP!!!! LIKE WHAT!? HOW??? @MTNGhana ITS OUTRAGEOUS!!! YALL NEED BETTER SECURITY!!" The OTP requested money for a service called Ghana Digital Society Service.
After reviewing the screenshot, some users explained that the transaction likely came from a POS device. They noted that POS transactions do not require an 'Allow Cashout' step, which is necessary for MTN users withdrawing funds.
Social media reactions varied. One user asked if Efya allowed cashout when using restaurant machines for payments. Another pointed out that many gateways can send prompts to any number, explaining why it often happens with MTN customers.
Recently, another woman went viral after claiming GH¢11,000 was withdrawn from her MoMo wallet without permission. In an emotional video, she insisted she had not shared her details and did not authorize any transaction.
Her story resonated with many online, prompting calls for MTN to investigate and reimburse affected customers.
