The search for missing persons in a collapsed illegal mining pit at Mpasatia has entered its second day.
Community members, supported by the police, recovered two bodies on April 1. It is unclear if others are still trapped beneath the debris.
The search effort has intensified. More locals joined after traditional authorities called for support.
Kwaku Duah leads the search party. He explained they have been working since 5 am, using basic tools to dig through the sand.
Mr. Duah noted that a community mining scheme had operated before but was halted by the new government. Since then, illegal miners have continued to enter the site undetected.
"This is not organized mining," he said. "It makes it hard to locate missing persons."
Salifu Ibrahim, the Assembly Member for Mpasaaso Ahenbronum, expressed concern over the situation. Despite calls to close the pits, no action has been taken by local authorities.
"I pray that God will help us," Ibrahim said. "We hope no more bodies will be discovered."
Since the incident, families have reported no further missing persons. Mr. Ibrahim added that the pit had been abandoned for some time but many illegal miners returned despite warnings to stay away.
