Mikki Osei Berko, a prominent figure in Ghana's film industry, has voiced grave concerns regarding the current state of the sector, likening it to being in a "coma." During a recent interview, he highlighted the significant decline in local productions and the challenges filmmakers face. Berko pointed out that while there is an abundance of talent, inadequate funding and support from both government and private sectors hinder progress. He emphasized that without substantial investment and strategic planning, the industry risks stagnation.
Berko also called for a revitalization of film festivals and awards to promote Ghanaian cinema on both local and international stages. He criticized a lack of collaboration among stakeholders and stressed the importance of creating platforms for emerging filmmakers to showcase their work. As he advocates for urgent reforms, including better distribution channels and marketing strategies, Berko remains hopeful that with collective efforts from all involved parties, Ghana's movie industry can recover and thrive once more.
