Ghanaians Celebrate as John Mahama's Convoy Passes By

A video of John Mahama's convoy has gone viral. Many bystanders gathered to celebrate as it zoomed past. The crowd chanted his name, showing their love and admiration.

This celebration comes as the cedi appreciates against the dollar and other currencies. President Mahama received loud cheers and excitement during his drive through a town. Large crowds waved, clapped, and recorded the moment.

People appeared emotional, treating it like a festive occasion. This support coincides with the Ghanaian cedi gaining strength against major foreign currencies. In April 2025, the cedi appreciated by 5.3% against the US dollar.

So far this year, its total gain is 7.44%. The local currency also strengthened by 0.71% against the British pound but dropped slightly by 0.3% against the euro.

The Bank of Ghana implemented measures to improve the cedi’s performance. They injected US$490 million into the market to meet forex demand. Additionally, an agreement was made with nine mining companies to buy 20% of their gold production in cedis before export.

This strategy aims to reduce pressure on dollar reserves and support the cedi's value. From May 2024 to April 2025, Ghana’s gold reserves increased by over 40%. This boost adds confidence to the currency market and helps reduce speculation.

In 2025, the cedi has been one of the world’s top-performing currencies. Inflation dropped to 21.2% in April, a significant improvement from last year when inflation was much higher.

Despite these positive indicators, many Ghanaians still face high prices for goods and services. The stronger currency has not yet eased household expenses for most people. However, many remain hopeful that prices will eventually reflect this appreciation.

In related news, rapper Criss Waddle praised President Mahama for pardoning Sammy Gyamfi. Gyamfi is CEO of the Ghana Gold Board and faced criticism after gifting dollars at a funeral event.

The presidency decided against further sanctions after Gyamfi apologized and received a warning from the Chief of Staff. Criss Waddle defended this decision, emphasizing Gyamfi's value to Ghana.
