‘Gwo Gwo Ngwo’ highlife legend, Mike Ejeagha, dies at 95

Nigerian music has lost a legendary storyteller. Mike Ejeagha, known for “Gwo Gwo Ngwo,” has died at 95.

He passed away on Friday evening, June 6, 2025. Ejeagha died at the 32 Garrison Military Hospital in Enugu. He had been battling prostate cancer since 2006.

His son, Emma Ejeagha, confirmed the news. He was with his father during his final moments.

Ejeagha was more than a musician. Born on April 4, 1930, in Imezi Owa, Enugu State, he shaped Igbo folklore. He created over 300 songs over six decades.

His deep baritone voice and soulful highlife rhythms earned him the nickname “Gentleman Mike.”

Though his name faded from mainstream charts, a new generation rediscovered him in 2024. Comedian Brain Jotter used his hit “Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche” in a viral dance challenge.

The internet erupted as Ejeagha’s music returned to playlists across Nigeria and beyond.

Tributes have poured in since his passing. Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah honored him by naming a road after him. He called Ejeagha “a legend and cultural ambassador.”

President Bola Tinubu also mourned his loss. He praised Ejeagha’s contributions to Igbo traditions and Nigeria’s musical history.
