Ghanaian singer Gyakie has released a new single, “Sankofa.” This soulful anthem explores reflection and emotional truth.
Co-written with Eyram Gbewonyo (Afrolektra), the song marks a new chapter for Gyakie. It is raw, introspective, and filled with vulnerability.
The title "Sankofa" comes from a Ghanaian adinkra symbol. It means to go back and retrieve what has been lost. The song beautifully captures reconnection, closure, and emotional honesty. With simple production and heartfelt delivery, Gyakie gives a preview of her upcoming debut album.
Gyakie's highly anticipated debut album is titled After Midnight. This project is deeply personal and inspired by quiet hours after midnight. During this time, emotions run deep and creativity flows.
Gyakie explains that most songs were recorded after midnight. She finds her best inspiration during these hours. The peace, bird sounds, and serenity fuel her creativity.
After Midnight reflects Gyakie's personal experiences and emotional journey. She shares moments of solitude, grief, and healing: “I’ve done a lot of crying after midnight too.” She schedules her tears for when she gets home from work.
The album's theme also draws from her upbringing. Her mother prayed for her and her siblings after midnight—a cherished family tradition that continues today.
“It was a consistent routine,” she says. “That time of night holds so much meaning for me.”
With After Midnight, Gyakie invites listeners into her world. It’s a space where raw emotions, nostalgia, and introspection collide. The album is best experienced in the stillness of the night at 12:01 AM when honesty flows freely.
