The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has addressed the arrest of Martins Vincent Otse, known as VeryDarkMan. This comes amid significant public interest and social media discussions.
In an official statement, the EFCC explained that Otse was invited due to “a series of petitions” related to alleged financial crimes. Despite multiple invitations sent to him, he did not appear.
A spokesperson for the EFCC stated, “The petitions involve serious allegations of financial misconduct.” They emphasized that these issues cannot be ignored.
Regarding rumors about his arrest being a retaliation for his social media criticism, the spokesperson clarified that this was not the case. They acknowledged Otse's attacks on the EFCC but insisted his arrest was unrelated.
The agency noted that any threats from Otse would be handled by law enforcement. They also confirmed that they have a legal right to detain him during investigations. A Remand Order was obtained for this purpose.
However, Otse has been granted administrative bail. He will be released once he meets all bail conditions.
The EFCC thanked the public for their vigilance in national matters. They appreciate Nigerians' interest in their operations and welcome public engagement.
Nonetheless, they warned against misrepresenting their motives. The EFCC should be allowed to perform its duties without fear or favor.
As investigations continue, the public will be informed if charges are filed based on evidence found. The agency assured that charges will follow once investigations are complete.
