Veteran Nollywood actor Jide Kosoko recently shared his challenging childhood. He described himself as a notorious rascal, which worried his parents and alienated him from peers.
In an interview on the Honest Brunch podcast, he opened up about his rebellious past. The show is hosted by Husband Material, Deity Cole, and Ezinne. Kosoko discussed the discipline he faced at home and how theatre helped reform him.
Born into a royal family, Kosoko was expected to behave with dignity. However, his childhood was marked by defiance and boundary-testing. His parents tried various forms of discipline to correct his behavior. Neighbors even warned their children to stay away from him.
One pivotal moment changed everything for Kosoko. As a young boy, he performed on live television. This experience left a lasting impression on him. He recalled feeling like a champion when people recognized him after the show.
However, his excitement quickly turned to fear at home. Instead of praise, he received a severe beating from his parents. They were furious that he had appeared on TV without permission. His father reminded him that as a prince, he should be entertained, not entertain others.
Just when it seemed the punishment would never end, fate intervened. Baba Ehund, a respected community figure, drove by their house. Suddenly, Kosoko's parents shifted their focus to greet him excitedly.
An observer named Uncle Jacobs made an important comment: “You are punishing this boy for emulating that man while celebrating him.” This remark changed how Kosoko's family viewed his interest in acting.
Instead of discouraging him completely, they set strict conditions for his passion. He had to balance acting with schoolwork and religious activities if he wanted to continue performing.
Kosoko reflected on this change: “Theater changed my life completely.” He noted that some parents who once warned their children about him began using him as an example of good behavior.
