To properly clean cabbage, start by rinsing it under running water and removing the two outer leaves. Cutting the cabbage into quarters exposes inner layers, allowing you to check for dirt or insects. Submerge the quarters in water briefly to remove debris. Avoid using soap or special cleaning products—water is sufficient.
Wait to wash cabbage until you're ready to use it, as added moisture can speed up spoilage. Store whole, unwashed cabbage in plastic wrap or a bag in the crisper drawer for up to two weeks. Discard if it becomes soft, slimy, or develops a foul odor. If you have excess cabbage, consider fermenting it into sauerkraut, which extends its shelf life significantly.
