In a candid interview on Asetena Pa, hosted by Akoto Mansa, UK-based Ghanaian Abena Agyei Amoafo shared her harrowing immigrant experience.

Madam Amoafo, who moved to the UK two decades ago for better opportunities, opened up about her struggles with culture shock, financial hardship, and personal challenges. At one point, overwhelmed by these pressures, she approached the UK Home Office, seeking deportation.

“I felt like I was drowning,” she said. Her struggles worsened with the breakdown of her marriage, leaving her to raise her child as a single mother.

A defining moment in her journey came in 2003 when, pregnant with her first child, she endured a 10-hour walk through a snowstorm. With no transportation from Watford to her home, she braved the cold from 4 PM to 2 AM.

“That night tested my limits,” she recalled, tears reflecting the pain of the memory.
