The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has highlighted the need to depoliticise chieftaincy disputes. This is part of efforts to resolve ongoing conflicts in many communities.
On April 2, during an interview on Joy News' AM Show, he spoke about this issue. The Banda MP stated that excessive politicisation worsens chieftaincy problems. He emphasized the government's plan to address this challenge.
Chieftaincy disputes have caused social instability and economic setbacks over the years. In some cases, they have even led to loss of life. A notable example is the Bawku conflict in the Upper East region.
Last November, over twenty people died due to renewed violence in Bawku. The Minister mentioned that critical work is underway to resolve this conflict.
He stressed that political influence has worsened these disputes. Removing politics from the resolution process is essential for peace. By doing so, traditional leadership can be respected and communities can live without fear of violence or disruption.
