I had to live to tell the story – Johnnie Hughes reveals why he went off air

Broadcaster Johnnie Hughes is back on the air after a health break. He expressed gratitude to friends, family, colleagues, and medical professionals who supported him.

On Monday’s "Johnnie’s Bite," he opened with a strong declaration of faith. He quoted, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?”

Hughes humorously acknowledged how some listeners view his commentary style. He said, “Some people say when I speak, they even panic.” A colleague joked that he bites hard figuratively.

Johnnie confirmed he stepped away to focus on his health. “I had to go and hide and recuperate properly,” he explained. “Health first. I need to live to tell the story — not become the story.”

He thanked Media General’s management and his colleagues on the Sunrise Morning Show. He also expressed appreciation for the medical team that treated him.

“Special thanks to doctors Sakina and Brocke and all the nurses,” he said.

Hughes concluded by stating he returns with “renewed energy.” He is determined to use his platform for truth and accountability.
