I never really knew what he was doing – Davido opens up about Hushpuppi

Afrobeats superstar Davido has shared his thoughts on Hushpuppi. Hushpuppi, whose real name is Ramon Abbas, is a convicted internet fraudster.

In a recent podcast interview, Davido discussed their relationship. He mentioned the harsh realities that push some Nigerians into fraud.

“He was my friend. I just used to see him around,” Davido said. “I never really knew what he was doing. But he lived a good life.”

Hushpuppi was known for his extravagant lifestyle on Instagram. In 2022, he received an 11-year sentence in a U.S. federal prison. This was due to his involvement in a multi-million-dollar fraud conspiracy.

U.S. District Judge Otis Wright II also ordered him to pay $1.7 million in restitution to two victims. His legal troubles began in June 2020 with a dramatic arrest in Dubai.

He was extradited to the United States and pleaded guilty in April 2021. Since then, he has remained in federal custody.

Regarding rumors of Hushpuppi’s potential early release, Davido commented, “Hushpuppi is coming out soon.” He added that it’s not worth being locked up for such actions.

Davido acknowledged the socio-economic struggles in Nigeria that lead people to crime. “In Nigeria, there is a kind of hardship you would face,” he explained.

“Some people think, let me ball for two years, then I’m good.” He expressed concern for those facing such desperation and offered prayers for Hushpuppi.

While Davido did not defend fraud, his comments sparked discussions online about young Africans' struggles and the allure of quick wealth despite risks.
