Actor and filmmaker Lilwin is facing a tough situation. He is working on a biopic about Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the revolutionary leader of Burkina Faso.
Lilwin believes this project is important. It honors an African icon known for his bold leadership and anti-colonial stance. “People see him as the new Sankara,” he said in an interview. “His courage inspires the youth, which is why I wanted to tell his story.”
Things were going well until trouble struck. A group of ten young men on motorbikes arrived at the set. They demanded that filming stop, and when Lilwin’s team tried to talk, chaos erupted.
“They damaged our equipment,” he recalled. “We were paying GHC15,000 every day to rent the place.” The landlord was understandably shaken by the incident and asked Lilwin to leave.
“He didn’t want any trouble,” Lilwin explained. So they had no choice but to vacate.
This setback is significant for Lilwin, both financially and emotionally. He was close to finishing the film, which aimed to celebrate African pride and leadership.
Despite this challenge, he remains determined. With most key scenes already filmed, he plans to find a way to release the movie and honor Captain Traoré’s legacy.
