Idris Elba, a renowned British actor and filmmaker, wants to boost Africa’s film industry. He proposed a partnership with the Ghanaian government.
Elba aims to create a modern film and creative village near Osu Castle. This village will train and employ creatives while promoting local storytelling.
During his visit to Ghana, Elba met President Mahama at Jubilee House. They discussed the importance of a dedicated creative hub for employment and education.
“We hope to build on this conversation,” Elba said. He noted their previous collaboration on “Beasts of No Nation.”
Elba emphasized that the project will provide training and job opportunities for Ghanaian creatives. “It focuses on education and infrastructure,” he added.
President Mahama welcomed the idea. He highlighted Osu Castle's historical significance as a UNESCO heritage site. “The castle has been abandoned for quite a while,” he noted.
He mentioned historic places within the castle, like where leaders once stayed. “It would be interesting for tourists to visit these places,” he said.
The President also shared plans for a crafts market alongside the project. “We want to establish a market for African crafts and jewellery,” he stated.
Ghana has a rich tradition of jewellery-making, which they aim to promote through this space.
Elba stressed the need for competitive policies to attract international productions to Ghana. “I have been in the industry for 30 years,” he said.
“For Ghana to be viable for international films, we need supportive policies.” He mentioned equipment imports, tax regulations, insurance, and labor laws as key areas.
President Mahama acknowledged potential increased activity around Osu Castle. He stressed the need for urban planning due to expected traffic from this project.
