Legal practitioner Maurice Ampaw has advised men who desire multiple wives or side chicks to opt for customary marriage instead of court (ordinance) marriage.
Speaking on GTV, he explained that customary law allows men to legally marry as many women as they want, unlike ordinance marriage, which permits only one wife.
“To avoid side chick drama, go the customary way. That way, side chicks can even be promoted to wives because all of them can be registered,” he said.
He further clarified that switching from customary to ordinance marriage automatically restricts a man to one wife.
“Once you choose ordinance marriage, you tell the Registrar General that you don’t believe in polygamy,” he added.
His remarks have sparked discussions on marriage choices in Ghana.
