Iraq sandstorm leaves many with breathing problems

A sandstorm in Iraq has caused respiratory problems for over 1,000 people. Health officials reported this situation in the central and southern regions.

In Muthanna province, an official told AFP about at least 700 suffocation cases. Online footage showed areas covered in a thick orange haze. Local media also reported power cuts and flight suspensions in several regions.

Dust storms are common in Iraq. However, experts believe they are increasing due to climate change. The environment ministry warned of more "dust days" ahead.

Pedestrians and police wore face masks for protection against the dust. Paramedics were present to assist those having trouble breathing.

Hospitals in Muthanna received around 700 suffocation cases. In Najaf province, more than 250 people were hospitalized. Diwaniyah province treated at least 322 patients, including children.

Dhi Qar and Basra provinces reported another 530 people with breathing issues. The sandstorm created an orange cloud that reduced visibility to less than one kilometer (0.62 miles).

Authorities closed airports in Najaf and Basra due to poor conditions. Local weather services expect conditions to improve by Tuesday morning.

The UN lists Iraq as one of the five countries most vulnerable to climate change. It faces regular sandstorms, extreme heat, and water scarcity.

A severe sandstorm last year resulted in one death and over 5,000 needing treatment for respiratory illnesses. The environment ministry warns that Iraq will experience more "dust days" in the future.
