'It was just an adventure in my old age': Bill Clinton on his life as a thriller writer

Former US President Bill Clinton and author James Patterson spoke with the BBC. They discussed their new political thriller, *The First Gentleman*. The story explores what happens when a president's husband is tried for murder.

This novel follows President Madeline Wright and her husband, Cole Wright. Cole is a former professional football player. He faces trial for the murder of a cheerleader from 20 years ago. The book combines elements of police procedural and courtroom drama.

Clinton reflects on his presidency while writing this novel. He recalls feeling like a storyline during tough times in the White House. "We tried to get all that in there," he said.

Instead of focusing on the First Couple, the book centers on two journalists. Brea Cooke and Garrett Wilson investigate the disappearance of Suzanne Bonanno. She was a cheerleader linked to Cole when he played for the New England Patriots.

Patterson sees journalists as central characters because they seek truth. Clinton agrees that honorable journalists can succeed even amid partisanship. He believes it’s important to tell the truth, even if it means admitting mistakes.

The story will soon be adapted into a Hollywood film by Steven Knight. Brea Cooke will likely be the main character in this adaptation.

*The First Gentleman* also tackles US debt and spending issues within its plot. President Wright proposes solutions for entitlement spending and balancing the budget. This release coincides with Donald Trump’s plans, raising questions about feasibility.

Clinton believes readers enjoy learning while being entertained by good stories. Their first book focused on cybersecurity; this one addresses budget negotiations.

Patterson emphasizes research and authenticity in their writing process. After finishing his memoir, he pays more attention to sentence structure now.

However, their initial drafts were challenging to create. Patterson admitted they struggled with character development early on. Clinton expressed frustration over not caring about any characters initially.

Despite challenges, they share a similar outlook on life: complexity over simplicity. Patterson notes that they see shades of gray rather than black-and-white situations.

Ultimately, this novel raises questions about duty and moral choices for leaders. Clinton understands that even under pressure, one must fulfill their responsibilities.

*The First Gentleman* by Bill Clinton and James Patterson is published by Century and is available now.
